Single Crystal Growth

In a co-operation of the Paul-Drude-Instutut (K. Ploog, C. Hucho) and the FU-Berlin (K.-H. Rieder, W. Becker) I have started last year a project for growing single crystals. We want to grow especially transition metal oxides and fluorides.

We are able to grow single crystals with the Bridgman method and with floating zone melting. For the latter we have build up a system in the PDI with radiative heating. The system was build up after a similar system at IBM Rüschlikon/Switzerland (G. Bednorz, D. Widmer).

In the future we want to investigate the metal-insulator transition in oxides (e.g. in Sr1-xLaxTiO3), antiferromagnetic properties in Fluorides (e.g. KCo1-xCuxF3) and the vibrational and transport properties of Vanadium oxides.

The growth of Vanadium oxides is part (TP C4) of the Sonderforschungsbereich 546 "Struktur, Dynamik und Reaktivität von Übergangsmetalloxid-Aggregaten" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The aim is the growth of single crystalls for other project groups in the Sfb which investigate surface properties of the Vanadium oxides.
At present we have succede to grow single crystalls of V2O5.
